When I look back on my career in the insurance industry, I am amazed at how far I have come. I started in the mail room at Erie Insurance as a temporary employee and never imagined that one day I would be leading a branch in my home state of Maryland. Over the past 20 years, I have had the privilege of growing through multiple roles, from Customer Service Representative to District Sales Manager, and eventually Branch Manager. Along the way, I have learned that leadership is not just about managing a team or achieving business goals. True leadership is about serving people, building trust, and making a positive impact both inside and outside the office.
Leadership Begins with Listening
One of the first lessons I learned in leadership is that it begins with listening. Early in my career, I observed leaders who spoke more than they listened and often made decisions without truly understanding the needs of their team. As I grew into management roles, I realized that the best leaders are those who listen first. Listening to employees, agents, and customers helps you understand their perspectives and find solutions that work for everyone. I have always tried to make time for open conversations and to be approachable. This not only builds trust but also encourages a culture where people feel valued and supported.
Adaptability is Key
The insurance industry has changed dramatically over the last two decades. Technology has transformed the way we interact with customers, handle claims, and manage policies. Expectations from clients have evolved, and the market has become more competitive. Through all of these changes, I have learned that adaptability is essential for effective leadership. Leaders must be willing to embrace new ideas, invest in learning, and guide their teams through uncertainty. This does not mean abandoning core values. In fact, adaptability works best when it is grounded in integrity, transparency, and a commitment to doing what is right for clients and employees alike.
Mentorship and Development Matter
A strong leader invests in people. One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been mentoring others and helping them grow professionally. Whether it is coaching a new Customer Service Representative or guiding a future Branch Manager, I have seen how mentorship can transform careers and strengthen teams. Leadership is not just about your own success. It is about creating opportunities for others to succeed and providing guidance when they face challenges. This approach also ensures continuity and stability within the organization, as people feel confident and prepared to take on greater responsibilities.
Leading by Example
I firmly believe that leadership is not about a title or position. It is about setting an example through your actions. Throughout my career, I have tried to model the behaviors I expect from my team. This includes showing respect to everyone, maintaining professionalism, and demonstrating a strong work ethic. Leading by example also means being accountable for mistakes and showing humility. People notice when a leader is genuine and consistent, and they are more likely to follow someone who practices what they preach.
The Importance of Community
Leadership extends beyond the walls of an office. I am deeply committed to serving my community. From teaching new drivers about road safety with the Howard County Police Foundation to volunteering with Rebuilding Baltimore and the Rainbow Community Center, I have found that giving back strengthens not only the community but also the culture of leadership. In the insurance industry, we have a unique opportunity to touch lives every day. Whether it is helping a family protect their home or guiding a young agent to success, leadership and service go hand in hand.
Embracing Challenges
No leadership journey is without challenges. Moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, to manage a branch was a major step in my career. It required me to adapt to a new community, understand a different market, and lead a team in unfamiliar territory. That experience taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of building relationships quickly. Returning to Maryland after seven years in Raleigh brought its own set of challenges, but it also gave me the opportunity to apply everything I had learned and make a meaningful impact in the community where I was raised.
Leadership is a Journey
The evolution of leadership in the insurance industry is ongoing. Every day brings new challenges, opportunities, and lessons. For me, leadership is not a destination. It is a journey of growth, learning, and service. The principles I have learned over the past 20 years—listening, adaptability, mentorship, leading by example, and serving the community—are timeless. They are the foundation of strong leadership and the reason why our industry can make a real difference in people’s lives.
Looking back on my journey from the mail room to Branch Manager, I am grateful for every role, every challenge, and every person who has helped me along the way. Leadership is about more than managing a branch or hitting targets. It is about building relationships, guiding others, and making a positive impact in the community. I am proud to be part of an industry that values trust, integrity, and service, and I am committed to continuing to grow as a leader while helping others do the same.
